    Israeli restrictions on Christian celebrations

    Written by: Tamara Haddad

The occupation’s attacks did not stop on worshipers and retreaters in Al-Aqsa Mosque, but directed these attacks on the Christian presence by imposing a siege on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem on Easter and Holy Saturday, by converting the roads leading to the church in the Old City into a military barracks and erecting barriers to obstruct pilgrims to it under the pretext of security.

This is repeated every year, as the occupation aims, through these racist acts, to establish a new fait accompli and change the legal, political and historical status of the Holy Land and the Islamic and Christian sanctities, as the occupation wants to send a message to the world that Jerusalem is under its administration and supervision and it has sovereignty over it without any other partner. He also wants to strengthen the Jewishness of the region and obliterate any other identity in particular, the Palestinian presence, whether Christian or Muslim.

The measures taken by the occupation not to give permits to Christians, whether to Christians in the Gaza Strip or the West Bank, come within a systematic framework and have several goals, including reducing the Christian presence and reducing the number of those who intend to go to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the biggest goal is to eliminate any Palestinian presence in the region, as it works within its policies to displace Palestinians are Christian Muslims from the Holy Land and empty it, not to mention his attempts to steal Christian property and turn it into infrastructure under the administration of the occupation municipality.

The escalation of attacks on Christian pilgrims through abuse, whether with offensive words or beating them, is nothing but a systematic war, from which the occupation wants to transform the existential political war into a religious war intended to enhance the concept of the Jewish state with a united Jerusalem as its capital.

This matter violates all international laws, and just as everyone has freedom of worship, as confirmed by the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, that everyone has the right to worship in religious places according to Article (18) and as indicated by Article (53) of the First Geneva Convention of 1977, which prohibited attacks on religious places. Therefore, what the occupation is doing in terms of operations, provocations, and preventing access to prayer, whether to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher or Al-Aqsa, is tantamount to a war crime that comes within a systematic religious framework.

Therefore, the Muslim Jerusalemites must rally with their Christian brothers and be present in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Holy Saturday to strengthen their presence and steadfastness. Just as the greatest role is on the Palestinian political side to document the international violations and submit them to the concerned institutions to highlight the image that reflects the racism of the occupation.

The role of the media is important in strengthening the campaign to protect worshipers, whether to Al-Aqsa Mosque or the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
